MILAN TRANSPORT

Milan Transportation - Transport in Milan is efficient and cheap and will get you around the city to whereever you want to go. Milan has a great public transport system in which you can purchase tickets as you wish to ride. With three subway lines and over a hundred tram and bus routes, you will be able to get anywhere without the needless hassle of a car. For transport tickets, you can buy these tickets from street vendors and stalls or at any metro station. For a small price you can ride the subway once, or for seventy-five minutes on the buses or trams. Trains run from six in the morning until midnight, with new trains arriving every five minutes. For more information, contact ATM at 800/016857. See the Tourist Information section of this Guide for info on the Milan Welcome Card which gives you free transport for 24 hours.

Travel Guide

Metro
There are three metro lines in Milan - red and green and yellow. This system covers a lot of Milan and it is worth getting a metro map from the Tourist Office on your arrival in the city or airport - see section on Tourist Information of this Guide.

Bus and Trams
There are maybe a hundred bus and tram services that cover all parts of Milan.

By Car
You can travel to Milan from Malpensa in about an hour on route S336 and then follow the signs in a southeast direction. From Linate, you just follow the signs to downtown.

If you do wish to drive around Milan, note that there is not free street parking, and if you plan on spending the majority of your time in the city, then a car isn’t necessary -if you need one, get a Milan street map and plan your trip before you set out. For roaming the countryside of Italy, you will find that a car is helpful though. Check out Car Rentals online as there is where you’ll get information on all the main suppliers.

Taxis
Taxis are numerous and use a special meter to clock up the fare. There are some surcharges such as for luggage and these extras are clearly stated in the cab. If you are doing a longer trip, it is worth while sorting out the fare before you start. Otherwise just check the meter is running and you’ll find this a reasonable form of transport.
